Editorial Team Functions, Roles, and Responsibilities
Editor-in-Chief
Role: The Editor-in-Chief (EiC) is the principal leader of the editorial board and holds final authority and accountability for the journal's strategic direction, editorial integrity, and publication standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and oversee the editorial vision, scope, and policies.
- Make final decisions on manuscript acceptance or rejection.
- Ensure the ethical publishing standards (COPE, OJS, etc.).
- Supervise and support the entire editorial board and peer review processes.
- Represent the journal at academic and professional forums.
- Coordinate with the publisher division and academic partners.
- Review high-impact or controversial manuscripts personally.
- Initiate special issues, editorials, and thought-leadership articles.
Co-Editor-in-Chief
Role: The Co-Editor-in-Chief supports the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) in managing editorial responsibilities and may act as a stand-in during the EiC’s absence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with editorial decision-making and manuscript reviews.
- Handle a subset of submissions independently, as assigned by the EiC.
- Contribute to the development of editorial strategies and improvements.
- Review peer reviewer comments and ensure their quality and relevance.
- Collaborate in author communications and revisions handling.
- Represent the journal alongside or in place of the EiC when required.
- Provide mentoring to section editors or guest editors.
Editorial Manager
Role: The Editorial Manager (EM) oversees the operational workflow of the manuscript submission and review process, ensuring timely communication and quality control.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage manuscript tracking systems (e.g., Journal System, Editorial Manager).
- Coordinate communication between authors, reviewers, and editors.
- Ensure timely completion of peer review and editorial decisions.
- Maintain and update author and reviewer databases.
- Assist in checking manuscript formatting, plagiarism, and guideline compliance.
- Prepare performance reports (e.g., acceptance rate, turnaround time).
- Organize editorial meetings and maintain documentation.
- Support scheduling, planning, and publication logistics
- Ensure conflict-of-interest disclosures and ethics statements are properly documented.
Language Editor
Role: The Language Editor is responsible for ensuring the clarity, fluency, and grammatical correctness of published content.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and edit accepted manuscripts for language, grammar, punctuation, and consistency.
- Ensure alignment to journal style and formatting guidelines.
- Collaborate with authors to clarify ambiguous language.
- Work closely with the editorial and production teams to finalize manuscripts.
- Support non-native English-speaking authors in refining language quality.
- Provide feedback to improve future submissions, where appropriate.
Editorial Board
Role: Academic and editorial oversight in specific subject areas
Responsibilities:
- Review and recommend manuscripts for publication
- Ensure the quality and relevance of submissions in their field of expertise
- Suggest and invite qualified reviewers
- Promote the journal within the international academic community
- Contribute to special issues or thematic sections
- Provide feedback on editorial policies and processes
Advisory Board
Role: Strategic guidance and global outreach
Responsibilities:
- Advise on the journal’s long-term vision, scope, and impact
- Recommend policies to enhance academic and ethical standards
- Support global visibility and credibility of the journal
- Identify emerging research trends and opportunities
- Assist in networking and partnerships with institutions or researchers
- Offer insights for the continuous improvement of the journal’s reputation
